Ariana Grande is the newfound master of celebrity impressions. Last weekend, Grande hosted "Saturday Night Live" and did a surprisingly great number of impressions, including Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna, Celine Dion and many more female singers. One of Grande's impressions that did not make it to air was her Judy Garland, but luckily for fans, "Saturday Night Live" released another cut-for-time sketch.
The sketch played out as an installment of "Cinema Channel" and was introduced by Taran Killam as host Daniel O'Dance and featured Garland in a 1961 science fiction film called "Up We Go in Our Fantastic Rocket." The fictionalized B-movie, which was self-funded, saw Garland as the captain of the rocketship who spontaneously broke into song and dance numbers whenever she wanted. Her crew even randomly broke into song and dance, even in the middle of an Alien invasion, because Garland had complete creative control over the fictionalized film.
Grande nailed her impression of Garland from her over-dramatic acting to covering her showtunes like "Get Happy" and "Zing! Went the String of my Heart."
"Look at all the stars out there, Captain Judy Garland," Beck Bennett said to Grande as Garland. "Well, there's gotta be over 3,000 of them. But even the brightest star out there doesn't compare...well, to you."
"If anything ever happened to you, I would walk out into space and let my body explode," Kenan Thompson added.
"Oh, thank you, darling," Grande's Garland replied in a sing-song way. "Thank you."
Grande made her hosting debut on "Saturday Night Live" last weekend and even pulled double duty by also being the musical guest. During her time as host, there were two skits that stood out, both of which saw Grande impersonating celebrities. The first sketch featured Grande impersonating Lawrence in a "Celebrity Family Feud" match that included most of the talented cast. The second impression-filled sketch saw Grande playing a TIDAL intern named Chloe, who had to save the streaming website. In order to save TIDAL once the server went down, Grande's Chloe had to sing in the styles of artists like Rihanna, Dion, Britney Spears, Whitney Houston and Shakira.
