The Dallas Cowboys are still looking from some help on the free agent market, but they are looking for bargains not to overpay for an average player. The Cowboys had interest in Robinson before he signed to the San Diego Chargers last season, but the two sides could not get a deal done.
Robinson is the best cornerback left in free agency, and with the signing of Casey Hayward, the Chargers will not try to resign the productive cornerback. Instead, he will visit with the Cowboys, who have a couple of issues with their defensive backs.
The Cowboys will have their best cornerback, Orlando Scandrick, returning to the field after he suffered an MCL and ACL tear during the 2015 NFL season. His return should help improve this defensive unit, but there is no telling what kind of condition or playing shape he will be in.
Dallas had their own free agent cornerback in Morris Claiborne. However, the Cowboys would re-sign him to a one-year deal. Claiborne will likely have one more chance to show that he can be the cornerback that the Cowboys drafted four seasons ago.
After Claiborne, there is Brandon Carr, who was the priciest free agent that the Cowboys have splurged on in the past couple of seasons. Dallas holds Carr to a higher standard, and although he has never missed an NFL game, he has played terribly over the past few seasons.
He has not lived up to his monstrous contract, which has hindered the Cowboys in free agency frequently. Dallas most likely lost out on veteran safety Eric Weddle and several other free agents, as they figured ways around Carr's gigantic cap hit.
Carr was thought to be a cap casualty right up until free agency. However, the inactivity from the Cowboys front office on the matter has been pretty shocking. It appears as though Dallas has found a cheaper option in free agency as they bided their time.
Robinson may not be a replacement for Carr, but he could allow the Cowboys to release Carr if they select cornerback/safety Jalen Ramsey during the 2016 NFL Draft. The Cowboys need to sure up this secondary if they hope to make a Super Bowl run anytime soon.
