While filming the third installment of the "Maze Runner" franchise, "The Maze Runner: The Death Cure," on Thursday, lead actor Dylan O'Brien was seriously injured after he was involved in an accident on set. The 24-year-old actor was quickly rushed to the hospital because he had broken multiple bones, and film production was stopped until further notice while he recovers.
The film's director, Wes Ball, took to Twitter on Saturday to give an update on O'Brien's current condition with a handwritten letter.
"Well, it's been a whirlwind of emotions these past few days," Ball wrote. "I've been overwhelmed with feelings of anger and sadness and guilt. But, ultimately I find myself left with deep love and respect for Dylan. He is one tough cookie."
"I'm sorry for the grief this accident has caused his friends and family as well as my wonderful cast and crew," he continued. "It's scary seeing your friend get hurt, but fortunately, Dylan is going to be just fine. After a few weeks of rest and recovery he'll be back up and running to finish our adventure together. All the best."
James Dashner, the author that wrote the novels which the popular franchise is based off of, also tweeted his support on Friday. "I just want to let everyone know that yes, Dylan was hurt, but that he's going to be okay. Not life threatening in any way," he wrote. "Production is postponed but certainly not cancelled. All that matters now is that Dylan recovers. We love you, Dylan!!!"
The accident took place in Canada, where the movie, which is set to come out in February 2017, is being filmed. Apparently, O'Brien fell off the back of a set that was made to look like a train and either fractured his cheekbone or orbital socket from falling onto his face.
"Dylan O'Brien was injured yesterday while filming Maze Runner: The Death Cure in Vancouver, Canada," Fox said in a statement at the time. "He was immediately transferred to a local hospital for observation and treatment. Production on the film will be shut down while he recovers. Our thoughts go out to Dylan for a full and speedy recovery."
