A man suspected in a triple homicide case in Connecticut fatally shot himself in front of police officers and a child on Saturday, the New York Daily News reported.
Authorities received a call around 9:40 p.m. after reports of gunshots, which resulted in the death of three women in a Manchester apartment complex.
After allegedly killing the women, the suspect ran into the apartment parking lot armed with a gun and a 13-month-old child, according to Manchester police Captain Christopher Davis. The suspect was greeted by police officers who responded to the call about Dye House Apartments within minutes.
Quickly after he realized he was surrounded, the suspect placed the child on the ground and shot himself. The child and police officers were not injured.
"It should be noted that the officers' quick response to the scene prevented the supect from being able to flee with the child and likely saved the child's life," Davis said.
The names of the suspect, victims, and child have not been released yet and the investigation is ongoing.
Sandra Murray, a resident in the apartment complex, said she was startled by the shots and saw authorities arrive quickly.
"It's sad. It's horrible this has happened," Murray said. "Everyone is so sad around here, just trying to figure out what happened. You're just praying for the families."
Murray added she witnessed officials remove bodies from the apartment around 6 a.m. the next day.
Manchester, a suburb of Hartford, has a population of about 55,000 residents.
