Facebook's Top 10 Most Talked About Topics Near You and Internationally For 2013

Facebook, one of, if not the, most popular social networking sites in existence has released the data for its most talked about topics for this past year and while Miley Cyrus, who topped the list of most searched for person of 2013, was talked about a lot, she wasn't number one.

Instead the number one most talked about thing worldwide on the popular social network was none other than Pope Fracis according to new data from the company, which measured the number of posts mentioning a particular person or event, including related hashtags. The site made live clickable hashtags a regular thing earlier this summer.

In a significantly less targeted and specific category, the word "election" was the second most talked about thing on Facebook in 2013 followed closely by the royal baby. Cyrus fell just behind the popular Internet phenomenon The Harlem Shake. The full list broke down like this:

1) Pope Francis

2) Election

3) Royal Baby

4) Typhoon

5) Harlem Shake

6) Flood

7) Miley Cyrus

8) Boston Marathon

9) Tour de France

10) Nelson Mandela

While the international rankings are interesting, Facebook also released United States-specific data as well which saw Pope Francis drop to number 7 on the list, with his first place position usurped by the Super Bowl. Some Americans may be proud to know that Miley Cyrus did not make the top ten most searched for things in the United States at all. Instead more worldly topics like the Syria Crisis, George Zimmerman and the presidential inauguration hit it big on the list.

The breakdown for the most talked about topics on Facebook for the United States breaks down like this:

1) Super Bowl

2) Government Shutdown

3) Boston Marathon

4) Syria Crisis

5) Harlem Shake

6) Pope Francis

7) George Zimmerman

8) Royal Baby

9) Nelson Mandela

10) Presidential Inauguration
