Leah Messer and her first ex-husband, Corey Simms, have been involved in a legal battle over their twin daughters, Ali and Aleeah, since their 2011 divorce. The drama between the exes has been documented on past seasons of the hit MTV reality TV series, "Teen Mom 2," and in a sneak peek for next week's episode, Simms stops by his lawyer's office to find out the status of their current custody situation.
After Messer admitted herself to a rehab program last season for anxiety and depression, Simms filed for custody of their 6-year-old daughters and claimed Messer was the reason the girls were excessively tardy and absent from school. But Messer explained in last week's episode, she agreed to enroll her daughters in a school that was closer to her ex-husband's home, even though it was 45 minutes away from her home and she struggled to get the girls out of the door on time.
In the clip, Simms meets up with his lawyer, Rusty Webb, who announces the court's decision in his case.
"You got virtually everything you asked for," Webb says. "You're gonna be primary caretaker, primary legal custodian. She no longer has the decision-making, it's shared now so you both have to share it. We were hoping that if she only has one day to take them to school, she'll get them to school on time the one day a week that she has them. So you've got them Monday-Friday, she's got them Friday-Monday.
"And she knows about this too?" Simms asks his lawyer.
"I don't know," he responds. "I mean, they mailed it out today, we picked it up."
"Miranda and I, we thought that we really wouldn't have the fun time. This is the hard time," Simms says, mentioning his current wife. "But this is what's gonna build them to be a mature adult that's gonna succeed in life and that's gonna go places. You know, I want them to talk about college and what they wanna do, that's what I want. So that's why I'm glad this went their way."
"It's amazing," Simms continues, shedding a few tears of joy. "We fought for so long, I mean, it's hard to hold back emotions but I really didn't expect it, you know? But for the girls' sake, I'm tickled pink that it happened."
