Tom Hanks To Make Broadway Debut

According to a report by Variety, actor Tom Hanks will make his debut in Broadway in the stagedbiography "Lucky Guy" by late playwright Nora Ephron.

Actor Tom Hanks is all set to make his Broadway debut at the age of 59. The Oscar award-winning actor will play the role of Pulitzer Prize-winning crime reporter Mike McAlary in the biography "Lucky Guy" written by late playwright Nora Ephron. The play will follow the journalist's personal and professional life until his 1998 death.

Producer Colin Callender said the crew could "think of no more fitting tribute to her extraordinary writing and remarkable body of work" than to move forward with the play.

"We are honored to be part of her legacy and remain committed to seeing her magnificent work Lucky Guy shine on Broadway," he said in a statement after her passing.

Oscar-nominated Hollywood screenwriter Nora Ephron who penned such romantic comedies as "When Harry met Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle" died of pneumonia in June after a battle with leukemia. Hanks completed negotiations for the role before her death.

Ephron was born in the Big Apple on May 19, 1941, the daughter of a Broadway playwright and Hollywood screenwriter, who told her to "take notes. Everything is copy."

She was eventually to become the queen of Hollywood romantic comedies, but her writing career began in journalism. In her early years she wrote for Esquire and New York Magazine, the New York Post and the New York Times.

"Lucky Guy" begins previews March 1 at the Broadhurst Theatre, with the limited engagement set for official opening on April 1.

Additional casting is to be announced. Tickets for the production will be on sale through May 19. Broadway plays with Hollywood stars tend to have brief runs because of the actors' other commitments; a limited run can create high demand from audiences, allowing theater owners and producers to set more expensive prices for so-called premium tickets, an increasingly common practice on Broadway.
