New Jersey Man Dies After Being Trapped in Salvation Army Clothing Donation Bin

A New Jersey man died after he got trapped in the door of a clothing donation bin on Monday night.

It's unclear whether 50-year-old Joseph L. Hanshaw was looking for warm clothes or a place to lay his head, the Press of Atlantic City reported.

Police in Bridgeton were called to the Salvation Army Church at Commerce Street and Mayor Aiken Drive at about 11 p.m. Monday, after passerby saw a person hanging from a clothing collection station.

Hanshaw was reportedly stuck inside the hinged door of the collection bin. Law enforcement officials said it took a few minutes to remove the aperture and extract Hanshaw from the bin.

The Bridgeton Fire Department was called to help free Hanshaw from the door. As soon as he was pried from the collection box, authorities rushed him to a nearby medical facility.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital, Press of Atlantic City reported.

Local law enforcement said the event "appears to be an unfortunate and tragic death by misadventure."

More information concerning the death is expected to be released following an investigation.
