The Chicago Bulls are reportedly pursuing point guard D.J. Augustin, who was waived on Monday by the Toronto Raptors. The Bulls are "strong frontrunners" to sign Augustin, Yahoo! Sports reports.
League sources told Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski on Tuesday that the Bulls intend to sign Augustin once he clears waivers and becomes a free agent at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
Chicago is looking to bolster its depth at guard after the loss of Derrick Rose for the season and several injuries to backup guards. The Bulls have Kirk Hinrich, Marquis Teague and James, who's struggling with a sprained knee, as options at point guard. Jimmy Butler, a 2-guard, is recovering from a foot injury.
Augustin, 26, was the ninth overall pick of the 2008 NBA draft by the Charlotte Bobcats. He played with the Indiana Pacers from 2012-13 and played in 10 games this season for Toronto; he was released to create room for the team's 7-player trade with Sacramento, according to CBS Sports.
His career numbers (9.4 points, 3.9 assists per game) dropped dramatically in his short stint with Toronto, where he averaged just 2.1 points and 1.0 assists in 8.2 minutes per game.
Chicago (8-10) are fighting to stay in the eighth playoff spot of the Eastern Conference after losing seven of its past 10 games. Rose, who tore the meniscus in his right knee, isn't expected to return this year.
