Mega Millions Jackpot Reaches $400 Million, Second-Largest in Lottery’s History

The Mega Millions lottery jackpot is now $400 million, making it the second largest pot in the lottery's 17-year history. According to Reuters, no one has won in over two months so the pot keeps growing.

The last drawing for the Mega Millions was on Tuesday, Dec. 10. According to CNN, five tickets came close to winning the grand prize and had the first five matching numbers but none of them matched all six. Regardless each person walks away with $1 million each. The winnings numbers were 5, 12, 22, 41, 65 and 13.

Even though the $400 million jackpot is a whole lot of money it doesn't come close to the last year's record-setting pot of $656 million. The prize was won on March 30, 2012 and split three ways between winners in Maryland, Kansas and Illinois.

The Illinois winners were among the first to come forward and were identified as Merle and Patricia Butler. The accepted their share of the prize money - $158 million - during a press conference. The coupe told reporters they bought the winning $3 quick-pick ticket at a local MotoMart convenience store.

"The first thing I spotted was I had a Mega Ball number," Merle told MSNBC. "Then I started on the other numbers. The further I went the more they matched. After I looked at it for a couple of minutes, I turned to my wife and said, 'We won.' She kind of looked at me funny and I said, 'No, we won.' And then she started giggling. She giggled for about four hours."

The next largest lottery prizes were $390 million and $380 million, Reuters reports.

The next drawing for the Mega Millions will be take place on Friday at 11 p.m. ET.
