The San Francisco Giants have reportedly joined the Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers as suitors interested in trading for Tampa Bay Rays pitcher David Price. The Seattle Mariners, meanwhile, are now unlikely to pursue Price after the left-hander's agent said his client wouldn't sign an extension with Seattle.
San Francisco is the latest to express interest in acquiring Price, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.
"Giants checked in on the David Price sweepstakes, but haven't gotten into any sort of exchange with the Rays yet," Olney tweeted on Wednesday.
The Dodgers, Rangers and Mariners are also "serious suitors" believed to be pursuing a trade for the Tampa Bay ace, according to CBS Sports. The Mariners, however, may drop out of the Price sweepstakes after a report the 28-year-old isn't interested in signing a long-term contract with the team.
"Just saw David Price's agent, Bo McKinnis, in lobby. Asked if Price would consider extension with Mariners. Said no," Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal tweeted on Wednesday.
Matt Snyder of CBS Sports described the Dodgers and Rangers' potential trade assets:
"...The Dodgers would possibly be forced to part with highly touted starter Zach Lee, 2012 first-rounder Corey Seager and/or power-hitting outfielder Joc Pederson.
"As far as the Rangers, they have a system flush with talent, but the specific names the Rays covet aren't yet known."
Price, a 5-year pro out of Vanderbilt, becomes a free agent in 2016. It's almost certain the Rays, who're unlikely to re-sign him once his contract expires, will trade him this season to acquire talent. Price finished the 2013 season with a 10-8 record to go along with a 3.33 ERA and 151 strikeouts.
