The Sacramento Kings are an extremely fun team to follow because you never know what might happen with them on any given day. The Kings are in the middle of another season in which they will miss the playoffs, but that, of course, has not stopped them from making headlines.
George Karl has been at the forefront of the majority of these headlines because he is not likely to be coaching the team next season. The most recent news was that the Kings were pushing him to resign. This morning, more news that could affect Karl came out and it involves Vlade Divac's future.
The Kings are close to a finalizing a multiyear extension with Divac, who is the general manager and vice president of basketball operations for the team. Divac was added to the front office early last year before eventually being put in charge of it all by owner Vivek Ranadive last spring.
Sacramento, according to many people, had a very good offseason as they added a lot of talent and even some veteran leadership and, because of that, they were hopeful to make the playoffs this season. That hasn't happened and, instead, it has been yet another tumultuous season for the Kings.
The immediate reaction to the news that the Kings were giving Divac a multiyear extension wasn't exactly positive considering the way this year has gone, but the Kings are confident he can help turn things around. The organization likely feels that Karl was a major reason for the lack of success this season and Divac was not the guy who hired Karl. Divac was put in charge after Karl was already given the head coaching position, so assuming Karl is fired this offseason, Divac will have a chance to bring in his own guy as the head coach.
On top of the reported extension for Divac, the Kings also plan to bring in more front office help. Former Pacers and Bucks front office executive David Morway has emerged as the leading candidate to join the organization in that same role and he is expected to help Divac with the team.
This news, basically, makes it a foregone conclusion that Karl will be gone this offseason. Despite the poor season, the Kings still like Divac and want to give him more of an opportunity, but with some help moving forward. We will now likely get to see if Karl was as big a problem this year as the Kings made him out to be.
