Virginia Amtrak Train Crashes into Vehicle After Driver Bypasses Crossing Gate, Authorities Suspect Alcohol Was Involved

An Amtrak train with at least 40 passengers on board crashed into a vehicle in south central Virginia Thursday morning.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Michele Anaya told the Associated Press that the incident occurred at about 6 a.m. on Route 40 in Waverly.

The Northeast Regional train 174 train collided with the Crown Victoria when the driver attempted to bypass a crossing gate that was lowered while the train was passing. Warning lights were flashing at the time.

Train 174 was traveling at 79 mph when it collided with the vehicle, authorities who spoke with WAVY.com said. The driver sustained injuries that were non-life threatening, and was transported by helicopter to a medical facility in Richmond.

Anaya stated that alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The Norfolk, Va. train bound for Boston carried 46 passengers, none of whom reported being injured, pushed the car around 30 yards, but didn't derail.

Photos from the incident show the train with minor damage in the front, while the Crown Victoria was completely totaled.

Clean up crews were sent to the site of the accident, and managed to clear the area by 8 a.m. The train continued on its usual route after officials gave the OK.

Waverly is located around 50 miles southeast of Richmond, Va., according to AP.
