Baltimore Orioles' Adam Jones Channels His Inner Degeneration-X, Defies Pie Celebration Ban

The Baltimore Orioles won on Matt Wieters' walk-off single in their home opener against the Minnesota Twins on Monday. That prompted outfielder Adam Jones to disobey an order from the team, but it was all in good fun.

Jones pied Wieters after the game to celebrate the win. Jones has been known for smashing pies in teammates faces after they've significantly contributed to a victory, but the Orioles issued a ban on the antic, citing safety reasons.

And here's what Jones had to say about it:

The All-Star slugger said after the game that he'll "probably get a letter" regarding the incident and will "plead the fifth." Jones took the whole ritual as far as having a local Baltimore bakery make the pies that he would smash into his teammates faces.

Jones knocked in a pair of runs himself, but it was Wieters, who has played in just 102 games since the start of 2014, that was the hero on Monday. Although he went 1-for-5, his one hit propelled the team to its first victory of the 2016 season.

Manager Buck Showalter joked after the game that he "lost control of the team again," in reference to the pie incident. The team issued the ban on the celebration ritual in February, to which Jones said, "It's no one's fault. It's just about safety. At the end of the day it can be dangerous so we're being smart."

But who cares about safety after a walk-off win on Opening Day in front of the home crowd?

Jones sure doesn't.

It's unlikely the celebration will continue throughout the 2016 season (barring extenuating circumstances in Jones' eyes), but it's good to see Showalter was able to joke about it and Wieters said he "didn't have any complaints."

The Orioles will have the day off on Tuesday, but they'll host the Twins again on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. ET, which will be Yovani Gallardo's debut with the team, and then again on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. ET.
