Christopher Nolan Adds Cillian Murphy To ‘Dunkirk’

Director Christopher Nolan likes to find good actors and work with them repeatedly. We've seen it with him and Christian Bale ("The Dark Knight Trilogy," "The Prestige"), Michael Caine ("The Dark Knight Trilogy," "The Prestige," "Interstellar"), Anne Hathaway ("The Dark Knight Rises," "Interstellar") and others. Most recently, Cillian Murphy ("The Dark Knight Trilogy," "Inception") is the one on the receiving end of Nolan's casting carousel.

According to TheWrap, Murphy has been added to the cast of Nolan's World War II action-thriller "Dunkirk" from Warner Bros. Pictures. Nolan will be directing from his own original screenplay. Murphy will join fellow Nolan regular Tom Hardy ("The Dark Knight Rises," "Inception"), this year's Best Actor in a Supporting Role Oscar winner Mark Rylance ("Bridge of Spies") and Kenneth Branagh ("Valkyrie") in the main cast.

"Dunkirk" will tell the story of the real-life evacuation of the French city during World War II which saved the lives of 330,000 Allied soldiers who were surrounded by German forces. In addition to the established ensemble cast, Nolan has also dipped into the well of younger talent with Fionn Whitehead, Jack Lowden, Aneurin Barnard and One Direction artist Harry Styles set for roles in the film as well.

This will mark Murphy's fifth role in a Nolan-directed picture, though it is unknown who he will play in "Dunkirk" at this time. Ironically, Murphy can next be seen in the similarly WWII-set drama "Anthropoid."

Nolan will shoot on film - a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format photography - with "Interstellar" cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema signed on as director of photography. Shooting will begin this May and Nolan will use some of the real-life locations where the events occurred.

"Dunkirk" is scheduled for a July 21, 2017 release.
