Nicki Minaj has confused her fans into thinking she's engaged to rapper Meek Mill on two different occasions now.
First, she showed off a gorgeous heart-shaped diamond ring last April, and then she was seen wearing a different massive diamond ring following her birthday this past December. Since both rings were worn on her left ring finger, everyone immediately jumped to conclusions and assumed that Meek had proposed, but Ellen DeGeneres finally got to the bottom of this.
While on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," which will air Thursday, the 33-year-old rapper explained to the host that she does have two diamond rings from "a boy," but that neither are the kind of diamond rings that everyone thinks they are.
"First of all, that's not an engagement ring," Minaj told DeGeneres when she asked where her ring was. "I have two rings from this boy that likes me...and he said that that's my second ring and that if I get a third ring that would be the engagement ring."
DeGeneres then asked her if she's ready to get engaged to Meek, even though the rapper's name never actually came up in the conversation.
"You know, I don't know," Minaj explained. "We're still figuring each other out. And in fact, I don't even want to say that I'm in a relationship anymore, because I think when people hear that, they go to like the mean place...You know, I used to be secretive. I used to say, 'I'm not in a relationship,' even though I was in a 12-year relationship [with Safaree Samuels]. Now I feel like just going back to that and saying, 'You know what? I'm single."
She then brought up Valentine's Day and how people assumed her and Meek had not spent the day together just cause she hadn't posted any pictures of her gifts. "Meanwhile we were really in bed all day on Valentine's Day," she said. "And then I got up and opened these three amazing gifts...It just made me realize that no matter how great your life is you can't even impress people. You just have to do you and make yourself happy...So now, I don't really care to say 'I'm in a relationship' or 'I'm engaged' or whatever. There's a boy that likes me. That's all."
Minaj has explained in the past that she and the rapper will not officially be engaged until she gets that third ring. She said last month that he had not yet proposed.
"I'm not engaged yet," she said at the time. "He said that my third ring would be my engagement ring. But sometimes he calls me his fiancé and I'm always trying to stop him, like, 'Nope! I ain't got that third ring yet!'...We're just taking it one step at a time. And, you know, if that happens, if I get married, then I'll have a child, and that'll be fun, because I can't wait to hold my baby."
