The Houston Rockets are on the verge of missing the playoffs with just two games left. The Rockets are a game behind the Utah Jazz for the eighth spot in the playoffs and will now need some help if they are going to sneak into the postseason.
The Rockets made the Western Conference Finals last season and were expecting to be even better than that this year but basically nothing has gone right for them. Jason Terry signed a one-year deal with Houston this offseason in the hopes that he could get his second NBA championship but that seems extremely unlikely now.
With the season possibly coming to an end Terry has faced questions about his future. Terry is 38 years old and was recently interviewed for the vacant head coaching position at UAB so it could have been assumed that he was nearing retirement, but that may not be the case. Despite this being his 17th NBA season Terry still wants to play a few more.
"No, not at all, unless there's just an outrageous opportunity that presents itself in the coaching world," Terry said when asked if this was his last season "Other than that, my goal is to play two more years. So you'll see a lot more of me."
Terry has made it clear in the past that he wants to get into coaching when he is done playing. The veteran guard has even said he would call it quits early if he received a coaching opportunity because he knows he needs to plan for his future. Despite getting an interview with UAB, Terry is no longer under consideration for that job and will continue to focus on playing.
The phrase Terry continues to use regarding his future is that he is keeping his options open. Terry won't pass up an opportunity to interview for a coaching position if it presents itself but ultimately his goal is to "win another championship and then go into coaching", later adding "that's my passion".
Terry will be a free agent after this season and given the turmoil that Houston faced all season it is hard to imagine him being back considering he wants to win. JET didn't have a great season this year, as he averaged just 5.8 points per game, but he still did shoot 35 percent from three so his leadership and shooting ability should be useful to a contending team next season.
