Netflix, YoTube and HBO GO are about to be joined by a lot more apps on the Chromecast in the coming months. In a recent interview, Google's vice president of product management Mario Queiroz stated that additional waves of apps are coming soon to the low-cost $35 dongle.
In an interview with Gigaom, Queiroz said a public release of the Chromecast SDK, which will allow developers to build and release their own apps for the device at will, won't be coming until sometime next year. However, in the mean time Google has given more than 40 developers access to a preview version in order to get a little bit of feedback about it.
According to Engadget, the company recently released a 14-page design guide that details the basic expectations for the development community in order to ensure its elegantly simple user experience remains intact once other developers start making applications for the device.
Another element about the technology that is encouraging developers and publishers to make compatible apps is the impending release of the SDK to developers next year. This should benefit people on both sides as compatible apps will mean a broader scope of what the Chromecast can actually do.
So, if you're looking for a good low-budget gift this holiday season, the Chromecast is set to impress on unwrapping and continue to impress as the year goes on and more and more developers create compatible apps for expanded functionality.
Currenty the device supports Netflix, YouTube, Pandora, HBO GO, VEVO and a handful of other apps, some that can play your local files via a WiFi connection.
