Marvel’s ‘The Defenders’ Will Begin Filming This Year, Charlie Cox Says

Fans of Marvel's growing Netflix empire have likely noticed the cross-over elements of "Daredevil," "Jessica Jones," and the upcoming "Luke Cage" and "Iron Fist" series. Well, that's because all four small-screen superheroes are eventually going to join up for "The Defenders" miniseries, kind of like a street-level Avengers squad. But when should fans expect this team-up to take place?

According to "Daredevil" star Charlie Cox, Netflix will begin filming on the ambitious project later this year. While at a Netflix panel discussion in Paris, Cox was asked about the possibility of "Daredevil" getting a third season.

"We don't know if there's going to be a season 3. I certainly don't know," he answered.

(Spoiler Alert Side Note: Considering the open-ended conclusion to "Daredevil's" second season and the tease of a resurrected Elektra, we're betting that Marvel will greenlight a third season.)

Though Cox was unable to give a firm yes or no to the future of "Daredevil," he did reveal that long-awaited team-up is finally getting underway.

"What we do know is at the end of this year we're going to be making The Defenders and, of course, Daredevil is very much a part of that foursome. I have no idea what the storyline is going to be for that show. I'm very excited to see how those world's combine...and interested to see tonally how those shows become one."

Thus far, we've met Matt Murdock, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage within Netflix's Marvel Cinematic Universe. The solo "Luke Cage" series is set to debut in September of this year, while "Game of Thrones" actor Finn Jones was recently cast as Iron Fist/Danny Rand. As of now, there is no start date set for "Iron Fist.""Jessica Jones" has already been renewed for a second season, though it is unknown if that will come before or after "The Defenders." Best guess: we'd assume after given the 2016 start date on production given by Cox.

The second season of "Daredevil" debuted last month and though it was not as well-received as the show's first season, Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle/Punisher and Elodie Yung's Elektra were considered highlights. Could they join The Defenders as well?

We'll keep you posted as more details emerge.
