The Washington Redskins have added another piece to its defensive unit during the offseason, signing free agent veteran cornerback Greg Toler to a one-year deal.
Toler will provide much necessary cornerback depth to this defense as they look towards the 2016 NFL season. He is a fourth round pick who has seven years of experience and has played for two franchises in his career, the Arizona Cardinals and the Indianapolis Colts.
During his 2015 season for the Colts, starting across from star cornerback Vontae Davis, Toler recorded 10 starts, 51 combined tackles, 10 pass defenses and a forced fumble. In his career, Toler has recorded a total of 259 combined tackles, two sacks, 45 pass defenses, eight interceptions, three defensive touchdowns and four forced fumbles.
The Redskins will have a ton of work to do during the 2016 NFL draft if they hope to repeat as divisional champions. Washington went 9-7 last season, but they made the playoffs, so they will be one of the last teams picking during the draft. Currently, the Redskins need a center more than anything else.
They could potentially land one of the best centers in the draft at their position, or at least a player within the top three. Washington also has needs at the defensive line, wide receiver and cornerback positions.
A quality defensive end like Spence could go a long way to rebuilding this defensive line that held the Redskins back from making a deep push into the playoffs.
They could look to select their next great wide receiver, but they do have Jamison Crowder waiting in the wings to challenge both Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson for a starting job.
The last position of need that they could fill would be cornerback, and it is unlikely that they will be able to land a top cornerback prospect so late into the draft. Washington did acquire strong safety David Bruton from the Denver Broncos, as well as tight end Vernon Davis.
They stayed pretty steady at edge rusher throughout free agency, only signing Kendall Reyes from the San Diego Chargers and re-signing Junior Galette.
Washington's big play during free agency was to grab a defensive back, not an edge rusher, so that could tell you what position they will be trying to take in the first round of the NFL draft. Signing Toler may give the Redskins the opportunity to select another position of need with their first round pick.
