Sony Pictures, Activision Team Up To Bring 'Ghostbusters' To PS4, Xbox One, PC This July [VIDEO]

The field of ghostbusting has always been a rather gender-specific affair. When the movie debuted 30 years ago, only a select group of men were considered Ghostbusters, and come this summer, only women will be able to hold that distinction.

It seemed there would never been a time when both men and women would be able to bust ghosts together. That is, until now.

Activision and Sony Pictures have announced that they will be teaming up to realease a four-player role-playing game on July 12 (which happens to coincide with the movie's July 15 release date) for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

The game, which takes place after the events of the upcoming movie, will feature a cast of male and female rookies who are tasked with keeping New York City safe. While this is going on, the characters, who have now become famous thanks to their actions in the movie, are away taking down high-profile poltergeists across the country.

As a role-playing game, each rookie has his or her own set of abilities and can also be leveled up. The levelling up process is done in the same way one would expect from a game within this genre: performing various taks, finding collectible items hidden throughout the city and, of course, defeating whatever ghosts cross your path.

In addition to this game, Activision will also release a mobile game titled "Ghostbusters: Slime City" in July. No specific details about it are known at the moment, but we do know it will be available for select iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices via the App Store, select Android devices via Google Play and select Kindle devices through the Amazon App store.

It's been quite some time since we've seen a "Ghostbusters" game, with the last one being 2009's "Ghostbusters: The Video Game." The original cast (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson) lent their voices to the game, with Aykroyd saying at the time that it was "essentially the third movie."

Once again, the "Ghostbusters" game will arrive for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on July 12.
