Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is reportedly not speaking with coach Mike Shanahan and anticipates having a new coach next season. Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, meanwhile, is reportedly discontent with his father and wants to leave.
Things inside Redskins Park are so bad that Griffin and Mike are no longer on speaking terms with each other, according to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport.
"When RGIII (and) Mike Shanahan pass each other in the building, they don't talk, don't say hello," Rapoport on Sunday tweeted a Redskins player as saying.
Mike's decision to bench Griffin for the remainder of the season seems to be the final straw in their strained relationship. Amid speculation that Shanahan will be fired at the end of the season, Dan Hanzus of NFL.com reported on Sunday that Griffin has told teammates he believes the franchise will have a new coach next season.
Kyle told reporters on Thursday he was frustrated by the decision to bench Griffin and had "zero involvement" in it, according to NFL.com. Regardless of how the coaching situation pans out next year, Kyle is reportedly finished working under his father, Mike.
"Kyle Shanahan decided it is no longer worth it to work with his father," Rapoport posted in another tweet on Sunday. "Expect him on his own path next year."
Despite the turmoil and the apparent disconnect with both Griffin and owner Dan Snyder, Mike reportedly wants to return next season.
"With one year and $7 million remaining on his contract, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan will note resign from his job and actually would like to return to Washington next season as long as he can run the organization the way he wants, according to multiple sources," ESPN's Adam Schefter wrote on Sunday.
Many speculate Mike, who already has near-total control of the franchise, is trying to get fired to ensure he receives his $7 million next year, and it's uncertain if he is bluffing to coerce Snyder into firing him - if Mike were to resign, he'd likely lose the money he's owed next season.
