Nokia Drops the Idea of Android based Smartphones: Eyes a Wearable Tech Instead by 2015

Nokia fans are in for a disappointment, the Finnish company is no longer working on its Android ventures. Instead, the company is rumored to be developing a wearable tech, slated for a release in 2015.

An affordable range of Android-based phones from Nokia had been doing the rounds for quite some time. But alas! the Finnish company has suspended the plan as of now; reportedly without even informing Microsoft about the decision ( a Nokia-Microsoft deal is on), according to the Chinese tech blog, C Technology

The mid-range Android phones from Nokia were reportedly under development with Nokia CTO office in charge. Even though Microsoft is in the process of acquiring Nokia, reportedly the CTO office or rather the products are not a part of the Nokia-Microsoft deal, the C Technology report claims.

The Finnish company was also planning a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 based 7-inch tablet earlier alongside the pocket-friendly Android phones but unfortunately these projects have been pulled off due to unknown reasons. Nokia has neither acknowledged nor cited any reasons for suspending the plans. The concept for the Android-based phones for Nokia was led by Peter Skillman, the head of the UX team, reports tech2.

The reasons behind Nokia abandoning the Android-based phones are still not clear apart from the fact that the competition in the market is extremely fierce. The new deal with Microsoft also does not allow Nokia to sell phones, smartphones or tablets under its brand name for next two years. Unless Nokia comes up with something really exceptional on the Android tablet it is not viable for the Finnish Company.

The Espoo-based tech giant is reportedly shifting its focus to emerging new technologies like wireless power transmission, low power electromagnetic energy generation, flexible displays, graphene sensors and augmented reality, according to a recent report on Unwired View. Nokia is also looking into wearable tech like a smartglass that we might get to see by 2015.

The idea may work well for Nokia since the market is new and does not have too many players.
