Michael Jordan's 1996 Looney Tunes basketball movie "Space Jam" may only have garnered a 36 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, but it is a beloved cult classic by anyone who grew up in the '90s. Given the current franchise friendly climate of Hollywood these days, it was just a matter of time until the movie received a sequel.
Yes, that's right, "Space Jam" may be getting a sequel 20 years after the original first hit theaters.
LeBron James' production deal with Warner Bros. from a few months back reportedly includes an option for "Space Jam 2." The project is currently in development with "Star Trek Beyond" director Justin Lin being courted to helm the film. To be clear, there has been no official confirmation from the studio that "Space Jam 2" starring LeBron James is a go. But it sounds like the project is gaining some momentum behind the scenes.
Andrew Dodge ("Bad Words") and Alfredo Botello are writing the script. As of now, it is unknown when audiences can expect "Space Jam 2" to hit theaters.
Rumors of a "Space Jam" sequel date back more than two years, with James himself fanning the flames of fan excitement. The expectation for a follow up with James only grew with his well-received turn in last year's "Trainwreck" alongside Amy Schumer and Bill Hader. Once James signed a production deal with WB, who handled the original "Space Jam" and owns the rights to the Looney Tunes characters, many began to connect the dots.
James' production partner at Springhill Entertainment said just two months ago that "Space Jam 2" was "on the radar," but did not offer any specifics.
The original "Space Jam" saw Michael Jordan team up with the Looney Tunes in order to defeat an invading race of aliens in a basketball game. We don't know what circumstances would occur that would require James to team up with Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the rest of the Tune Squad, but we definitely are interested in seeing it. Oh, and make sure you get Bill Murray to appear again. That's a must-have for fans.
