Nintendo's "Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE" is coming out in a little over a month, and it's getting fans hyped for the Atlus-developed RPG by releasing a new trailer dubbed "Hyped for Combat."
The trailer, narrated by "DJ MasterSeal," introduces the games setting and dives into the various kinds of encounters that players will have to face as they follow Fortuna Entertainment's newest Mirage Masters, Itsuki Aoi, Tsubasa Oribe, and Touma Akagi, as they make their debuts and protect Tokyo from hostile Mirages.
"Hyped for Combat" begins by showing Fortuna Entertainment's offices. Inside, we're introduced to Maiko Shimazaki, a former gravure idol and the company's president, as well as Barry Goodman, a trainer. Glimpses of Fortuna Entertainment's other singers - and future party members - Kiria Kurono, Yashiro Tsurugi, Mamori Minamoto, and Eleonora Yumizuru, also appear. Lastly, the trailer shows off the various characters fused with their partner Mirages and utilizing Performa to fight different types of Mirages found in the Idolasphere dimension's dungeons.
The real meat of the trailer, however, is the combat. To those who had only been following what Nintendo of America has revealed thus far, the only thing they really knew about combat was that it was going to be an amalgamation of the three series that inspired the game: "Fire Emblem," "Shin Megami Tensei" and "Persona." For example, the characters fight by pairing up with with unique versions of characters from the "Fire Emblem" series, instead of demons from "Shin Megami Tensei" or Personas, a manifestation of the user's psyche.
Finally, thanks to this trailer, those viewers get to have a first-hand look at how combat plays out. First and foremost, we see that players are able to switch out active party members mid-battle to one on standby in order to suit the situation that they're in. This is something that you could do in "Shin Megami Tensei" but was absent in "Persona."
Next, we see that weapons the main cast use have elemental attributes that affect a character's strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, the weapons adhere strictly to the "Fire Emblem" weapon system: sword beats axe, axe beats lance, and lance beats sword. These attributes not only impact how much damage various characters deal or receive, but they also play into another aspect of the battle system: Session attacks.
A Session attack works similar to Follow-up attacks seen in the "Persona" series. By hitting an enemy's weakpoint, a character will jump in and assist, doing their own attack to pile on extra damage to an opponent. However, this also works in reverse, and enemies appear to be capable of doing the same to deal extra damage to your characters.
Lastly, there are Ad-lib Performances, which as the name sounds, activate at random but can turn the tide of battle, and Special Performances, which are super attacks.
"Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE" will come to North America and Europe for the Nintendo Wii U on June 24, 2016. It will be available in both standard and limited editions.
