Microsoft Surface Pro 5 News, Release Date and Rumors: Leak Suggest 4K Screen For Microsoft's Next tablet Hybrid

This weekend, new Surface Pro 5 rumors are doing the rounds. Word has it Microsoft is likely to launch the device with 4K screen.

Though not a new rumor, recent reports have suggested Microsoft will offer a premium variant with the high resolution screen while default display will remain 2k. Surface Pro 4, launched last October, was rumored to launch with 4k screen but did not. MacBook Pro 2016 is speculated to feature 4K display. If Apple introduces 4K HD screens, Microsoft will have to play catch-up.

Surface Pro devices earned popularity following launch of Surface Pro 3. However, Surface Pro 4 launched to initial criticism, with early users complaining of battery drain. Microsoft fixed these issues earlier this year. Various reports had suggested Intel's Skylake were to be blamed; early use without tweaking may have caused issues. Nevertheless, Surface Pro 4 proved a winner on hands for Microsoft.

A Kaby Lake powered Surface Pro 5 is likely to launch next year suggest various reports. However, Surface Pro 5 is unlikely to become the first device to be powered by Intel's latest. Asus, earlier announced a Surface Pro lookalike at Computex. Kaby Lake is expected to provide marginally significant improvements over Skylake. Microsoft however could benefit from skipping Kaby Lake.

Kaby Lake was thought to be delaying Surface Pro 5 but it now looks unlikely. After initial issues it faced with Surface Pro 4, Microsoft may not be quick to jump onto Kaby Lake bandwagon. The wait could turn into a gamble for the Redmond giant as devices launched late next year could feature the 10 nm Cannonlake, which boasts of major improvements over the existing 14 nm architecture.
