Deus Ex' Inspired Prosthetic Arms Coming Out Next Year

Game publishers Square Enix and Eidos Montreal entered a joint venture with a UK-based startup and a hardware manufacturer to create prosthetic limbs inspired cyberpunk video game series Deus Ex.

British startup Open Bionics has previously partnered with Disney to create prosthetics based on Frozen, Iron Man, and Star Wars. This time, it will create two bionic arms- the Adam arm and Titan arm- inspired by the game's main character Adam Jensen minus the lethal contraptions.

"Working with Deus Ex to re-imagine the future of bionic prosthetics has been a fantastic creative process," Open Bionics CEO Joel Gibbard said in a press release.

"It is has been made even better by seeing people wear the bionic arms and get so much enjoyment out of it. This collaboration goes to show how bright the future of bionics is. We feel lucky to have been able to work with the design team at Deus Ex."

Eidos Montreal have designed Jensen's bionic arm by using their high level of expertise in 'near-futuristic art direction and augmentations,' CNET reported. Open Bionics, on the other hand, will develop the affordable 3D-printed prosthetic arms and incorporate Razer's StarGazer webcam and Intel RealSense technology to enhance real-life 'augmentations' coupled with 'speed and precision' as shown in a teaser video.

"We're excited to contribute to this incredible partnership with the Razer Stargazer," Razer co-founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan said as quoted by International Business Times. "As the world's most advanced webcam, it is a precise hand tracking solution that allows everyone to experience first-hand the future of augmentations."

The prosthetics are expected to be released sometime in 2017. However, they will be featured at gaming events like E3 and GameCom. This isn't the first time prosthetic limbs were created with inspiration from a highly popular video game series. Game publisher Konami engineered a prosthetic arm based on the one used by Snake in Metal Gear Solid 5 for James Young, an avid 25-year-old British gamer who lost his an arm and leg in a train accident in 2012.
