Catherine has been quite the thorn in Mary's side. She's conniving, vindictive and you can argue she's the reason Mary (Adelaide Kane) and Francis (Tony Regbo) aren't walking down the aisle to smiles and laughter.
However, whatever you may think of Catherine (Megan Follows), it turns out there may be someone worse than the queen of France - Mary's mother.
"Her character's kind of delicious and sort of Catherine-esque in her manipulations," Kane said, according to EOnline, of Amy Brenneman who will play Mary's mother Marie de Guise. "Where Catherine uses her children, she still ultimately loves them and wants their happiness. With Marie de Guise, she does use Mary, and it's questionable whether or not she's emotionally invested in Mary's emotional well-being."
Brenneman previously showed her excitement about the role as Mary's mother when she posted the following tweet back in November:
Yep,it's true. Off to a wardrobe fitting to play the badass, Marie de Guise, on @CWReign. Watch out, @AdelaideKane, mama's coming!
She also posted the pic above -- along with this one -- of her on the set of "Reign".
While it doesn't seem as if Marie cares about her daughter we know of at least one person who does - Clarissa. Unfortunately Clarissa cares so much for Mary that she killed Aylee to make Mary believe Nostradamus' prophecies are accurate. For most of the season Clarissa has been the mysterious girl with the burlap sack over her head. However, Adelaide Kane recently said we will get more answers where Clarissa is concerned before the end of the season.
"The good thing about Clarissa, the interesting thing is that her motivation is completely her own," Kane said during an interview with TVLine.com. "She's not driven by politics, she's not driven by love. She has her own moral code and her own set of reasons for doing what she does. And those will unfold throughout the season.
"She's one of those characters who's beholden to no one and has a lot of freedom, and as a result is incredibly dangerous."
The last we saw of Clarissa she was being punished by Nostradamus for killing Aylee. What has Nostradamus done to her? As for Mary, she ran off with Bash fearing Nostradamus' prophecy that predicts Francis' death if Mary and Francis were to marry.
According to the preview for the midseason premiere, "For King and Country", it appears Mary has returned to the Castle and the fallout from her decision to run begins. Also, it seems she and Bash will share a kiss for the second time. (Bash/Mary shippers, you have permission to get happy.)
"Reign" returns Jan. 23 at 9/8c on The CW.
