Ex-NFL player and former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Davone Bess is getting into the headlines again following a bizarre standoff with the police in his Arizona home.
Bess is facing a number of felony charges after his arrest. As per charging documents, the former football player was reportedly stopped by police in Gilbert for driving without his headlights on. A local judge ordered his release after posting a $2,500 bond on Monday night, ESPN reported.
According to Yahoo Sports, authorities tried to halt Bess for driving his silver Mercedes without turning the headlights on, however, the former NFL player refused to heed police order to pull over. After rolling down his car window, he started making hand gestures as if he was shooting the cop then fled the scene at high speed. Rather than risk public safety by chasing him, they waited until he reached his home.
Upon the police's arrival at his residence, Bess barricaded himself first inside his Mercedes before going inside his house while brandishing a blade to his throat at the front window. After hours of tense negotiation, Bess remained defiant but he did open the front door. The cops then sent in a police dog which bit his left forearm, leading to his arrest by 4:45am. After being released on bond, Bess' actions are highly restricted. He is permitted to own guns or get drugs without a valid medical prescription from a physician.
As a rookie, Bess was drafted by Miami Dolphins in 2008 and played for the team for five seasons until he was traded to Cleveland in 2013. For some reasons, Browns still signed him to a three-year contract worth $11 million despite having multiple issues.
His football career ended abruptly after playing a single season with Cleveland. In his last season, he missed two games due to personal reasons and even posted an image on Twitter showing a box filled with pot. He was also previously detained after getting into heated dispute with a sheriff's deputy at the Miami International Airport.
According to USA Today, Bess attended the University of Hawaii before being drafted with the Dolphins. In his six NFL seasons, the 30-year-old wide receiver had 363 passes for 3,809 yards and 14 touchdowns.
