Money in the Bank 2016 did cause a major shakeup at WWE last Sunday. Seth enjoyed his championship victory over the unpopular Roman Reigns only briefly. No sooner had Rollins acquired the World Heavyweight Championship, he lost the highly coveted title to no other than a former Shield brother like himself, Dean Ambrose.
In fact, the MITB 2016 event was all about the Shield. Ambrose, Reigns, and Rollins were all former Shield members. Before Ambrose could secure his place in the roster of champions, he needed fought his way to the briefcase in the highly anticipated ladder match which saw him fighting against Chris Jericho, Cesaro, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, and Alberto Del Rio, Hollywood Life reported.
Ambrose then cashed in his MITB briefcase to fight the newly crowned Seth Rollins. In the insane turn of events, a clearly exhausted Rollins succumbed to defeat after Ambrose did his Dirty Deed which led him to the championship title via pinfall. However, Ambrose may not enjoy it for long. Cageside Seats reported that Ambrose is not really expected to hang on to his newfound WWE world heavyweight title for a while. He might even lose it to someone else at Battleground event on July 24.
Meanwhile, WWE's brand extension is happening in four weeks' time which will split up RAW and SmackDown talent rosters. SmackDown events will be moving to Tuesday nights starting on July 19.
In another related news, WWE handed down a 30-day suspension to Reigns (Joe Anoa'i) following his violation of the company's health and wellness policy. Having lost to Seth Rollins in the World Heavyweight Championship at the MITB 2016, the former champ was slated to face new Heavyweight champion Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins at July's Battleground PPV.
"I apologize to my family, friends and fans for my mistake in violating WWE's wellness policy. No excuses. I own it," tweeted Reigns after accepting full responsibility.
