American fastfood giant KFC in India is giving out a built-in power bank to its customers for every order of burgers and fried chicken.
Called "Watt-A-Box," the limited-edition phone charging-meal packages in Delhi and Mumbai KFC stores add another useful feature to paper boxes with food inside. Most of the boxes are given to customers through an online contest while some are simply gifted as an add-on to their ordered meals at select branches.
"Each one of us spends a considerable amount of time on smartphones daily. And the phone battery going dead is almost like a nightmare! No longer is that the case, with the Watt-a-Box around," Lluis Ruiz Ribot, chief marketing officer at the fast-food chain's India unit said as quoted in a report by Quartz.
This isn't the first time that food chains have attempted to add a technology twist to their products, Times of India reported. In the past, Pizza Hut used to deliver their pizza offerings in special boxes with a pop-out hole on the side where customers could slip in a lens into it and enjoy having a pseudo movie projectors. Another American food chain tried something similar by hooking up with Rovio and Sony to create 360-degree videos in support of the Angry Birds movie.
Meanwhile, KFC names 76-year-old actor George Hamilton as the food chain's first Colonel Sanders promoting a specific food product, the Extra Crispy Chicken. Hamilton is the fourth Colonel Sanders actor that appear in the chain's marketing campaign following the footsteps of Jim Gaffigan, Norm MacDonald, and Darrell Hammond.
"Extra Crispy is a huge opportunity for our business. Over half of people don't know that we have more than one recipe. Extra Crispy Chicken is fried to a golden brown. George Hamilton isn't fried to a golden brown, but he is tanned to a golden brown," KFC CMO Kevin Hochman told Business Insider.
The latest ad campaign is part of KFC's effort of highlighting the chain's "food story" in a bid to convince its consumers of the company's commitment to prepare reliable fried chicken.
