The bank robber nicknamed the "I-55 bandit" for committing crimes across five states pleaded guilty on Friday in St. Louis, SeattlePi.com reported.
Andrew Maberry, 19, of O'Fallon, Ill., entered his plea in U.S. District Court and could face up to 20 years in prison.
According to prosecutors, Maberry began his robbery spree stretched from May to August, robbing a total of 10 banks. He started in Missouri and Illinois near Interstate 55, leading to his nickname.
Maberry robbed banks in the Missouri towns of Arnold, Crystal City, and Cape Girardeau. He also committed four bank robberies in Maryland, two of which occurred in Bel Air and two others in Essex and Ocean City. Lastly, he robbed banks in Edwardsville, Ill., Hurricane, W.Va., and Jackson, Tenn.
After noticing a pattern, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a news release on Sept. 10 and asked for the public's help in finding the suspect. Additionally, the FBI posted images from security camera footage on billboards.
Shortly after the FBI's campaign began, the U.S. Attorney's office in St. Louis received several calls identifying Maberry as the man in the footage. On the same day the news release was sent out, Maberry turned himself in.
Rebecca Wu, a spokeswoman for the FBI, did not comment on how much money Maberry collected throughout his spree. When he robbed the banks, he used a note suggesting he was armed though he never showed a weapon. No one was injured during his robberies.
Dean C. Bryant, an FBI special agent in charge of the St. Louis branch, said the public's help played an instrumental role in Maberry's case.
