After a seven and a half year career at "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" bid a fond farewell to everyone's favorite British correspondent John Oliver, who will be moving on to host a show of his very own on HBO. After abandoning a pre rehearsed bit between the two, Stewart took time in the show to pay a video tribute to Oliver while showering him with compliments. Eventually the comedian was brought to tears by Stewarts goodbye and the cheers from an adoring audience.
Olive has been a long-time correspondent on the show but was given special treatment earlier this year when Stewart left the show temporarily to direct a film in the Middle East. Oliver was given the task of standing in as the show's host in the eight week interim.
According to the L.A. Times, Oliver joined the show in 2006 and quickly became a standout correspondent taking on diverse subjects with remote pieces from the Repuiblican National Convention, South Africa and Barack Obama's presidential inauguration. Despite his success, he was never shy about throwing his sophisticated humor to the wind and getting into a Dickensian British character for some guaranteed laughs, a part of the comic's repertoire that Stewart even highlighted in his video tribute.
Oliver thought he had come out to the stage to do a bit about the royal family. Stewart quickly made it clear that the rehearsal for the bit was a complete ruse and Oliver looked honestly confused and surprised to find out that he was not going to be performing the bit. Toward the end of his tribute, Oliver became overwhelmed with emotion and began to cry until Stewart gave him a hug and broke the tension.
"There's only one British royal I care about tonight and his name is Prince John Oliver."
