Football is all about teamwork and it has been proven time and again how even the best player on the team cannot score a win on his own. Lionel Messi may have been FIFA's World Player of the Year five times in a row and must have scored hundreds of goals throughout his celebrated career, however, his performance for the Argentinian national football team has been less than impressive.
2007 was the first time when Messi played for his team internationally in Copa America. Unfortunately, the team faced a crushing defeat of 3-0 at the hands of Brazilians. He got another chance to propel his home team to fame in 2014 World Cup, but once again they lost 1-0 against Germany during extra time.
Once again, 2015 Copa America gave Messi-led Argentina team to dominate the tournament. However, once again, the team lost to Chile in the penalties. Argentina and Chile met again in 2016 edition of Copa America, tournament's 100th anniversary, and this time Argentina beat its rivals by 2-1.
In final, when the two teams were pitted against each other, they reach the penalties stage. Lionel Messi misses his spot kick and led his team to yet another crushing defeat of 4-2 on penalties. After his fourth defeat in a decade, Messi decided to announce his retirement from international football saying, "It's been four finals, I tried," as per reports.
