The game designers behind Resident Evil 7 deliberately intensified the horror content in the seventh installment to the franchise. Virtual reality even takes the horror gameplay experience to the next level to such an extent that the game becomes too scary to play.
For game director Koshi Nakanishi, playing the game in PlayStation VR should be a willful decision for it takes a certain degree of responsibility due to its unsettling atmosphere filled with immersive horrifying scenes that may follow you in your sleep.
"You take responsibility if you choose to play in PSVR Mode. Whether you think you're ready for it or not is up to you to decide. We certainly did have feelings at some points where we thought it was possible to push it too far in VR with horror," Nakanishi commented as per Capcom's Unity Blog.
Despite earlier concerns of the possible disturbing experience that gamers may have when playing the game on PlayStation VR, Resident Evil 7 producer Masachika Kawata thinks that "VR is a really good match for horror."
"When we first got it implemented we were all so excited to try it out, put on the headset, and get into the horror experience. You have to try it out for yourself to figure out how immersive it is and how you feel like you're right there in the room," Kawata said as quoted by Video Gamer.
For people who are too scared to play the game alone, Kawata does offer sound recommendation. It is better to play the game as your family or friends watch you in intense terror. The suggestion sounds like a better alternative to "driving yourself crazy with a horror game."
If you feel it's too much of an intense experience to play on your own, there's always the fun of enjoying horror in a communal setting," Kawata added as quoted by The Verge.
