Los Angeles (12-13) suffered yet another loss in their backcourt on Thursday with the announcement Kobe Bryant would be sidelined for at least six weeks. Bryant, who came back earlier this month after tearing his Achilles tendon in April, suffered a knee injury on Tuesday against the Memphis Grizzlies.
"Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, who hyperextended his left knee in Tuesday night's game at Memphis, had an MRI exam this morning and was examined by team physician Dr. Steve Lombardo of the Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic," the Lakers said in an official press release. "Results of the MRI show that Bryant has a fracture of the lateral tibial plateau of his knee. He is expected to be out approximately six weeks."
Bryant joins injured guards Steve Nash, Steve Blake and Jordan Farmar on the sidelines. Xavier Henry will start at point guard, and Jodie Meeks will start alongside him, according to the Lakers' website.
"It's hard to get this type of news, especially when we've got already so many injuries, when we've been through so many injuries the year before," Lakers veteran Pau Gasol said of Bryant's injury, via ESPN. "It just keeps piling up. It's not the best thing for us, for sure, but we've just got to continue to go forward. We understand it can happen."
Minnesota (13-13), meanwhile, is battling to move above the .500 mark. Kevin Love is making a case for the NBA MVP award with team-highs of 25.2 points and 13.7 rebounds per game.
Kevin Martin is adding 20.6 points per game and is coming off a 22-point outing in Wednesday's 120-109 win over Portland.
