Target has announced a 10 percent discount for shoppers this weekend to calm down agitated buyers over a data breach.
Shoppers are staying away from Target stores after a data breach that compromised user details of nearly 40 million subscribers who had logged in between November 27 and December 15. To pacify customers, the Minneapolis-based retailing company is offering a 10 percent discount for shoppers this weekend and has assured a free credit monitoring service for those whose details were breached.
The offer will be valid only for two days; December 21 and 22. The deal comes with certain terms and conditions. The discount is only viable on in store purchases and restricted to one per member. The offer will not include any purchases made on entertainment cards, airtime cards, prepaid cards, iTunes cards, gift cards, products from Apple, Bose, video games, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles, Target Mobile, prescriptions, optical, and alcohol purchases, according to a recent post on syracause.
While announcing the offer, the Target CEO, Gregg Steinhafel issued an apology stating the data breach had been taken care of and it was completely safe now to shop at Target stores. "We're in this together, and in that spirit, we are extending a 10 percent discount - the same amount our team members receive - to guests who shop in U.S. stores on Dec. 21 and 22," said Steinhafel, according to the press release. "Again, we recognize this issue has been confusing and disruptive during an already busy holiday season. We want to emphasize that the issue has been addressed and let guests know they can shop with confidence at their local Target stores."
The social media sites were flooded with agitated comments from Target customers complaining about not being able to get in touch with the company website or customer service desk, over the week. Acknowledging the concerns, the company has come up with a free credit monitoring service for the clients whose user details have been breached. The company will be in constant touch with the customers and will inform them over time when and how to access the service.
