Yahoo Mail Reintroduces 'Smarter' Tabs; Will It Make Up For The Outage?

Yahoo is bringing back the long-lost features to its free online email service. Users will now have a choice to select "Recent View" to switch between emails, drafts and search results or use its older "Tabs" format.

Yahoo has had some rough times recently, since it revamped the mail service in October and removed some of the most popular features, including Tabs. Also nearly a week-long outage had many users and bussinesses furious. Now, it seems the web company is trying to make peace with its customers by fulfilling some of their long-overdue demands. Yahoo is finally bringing back the popular "Tabs" option into its Mail service, so users can choose from Recent View or Tabs feature to switch between emails, drafts and search results.

Yahoo tried defending its decision to remove the tabs from its mail service in a company blog post, Thursday. The internet company said the users complained about having too many tabs open while working on their mails, which made it difficult to manage. Instead the company introduced a revised version of its tabs, the "Recent View" for switching between emails, drafts and search results.

"Many of you still missed tabs. So, we're bringing back tabs, but this time, they're a bit smarter," Jeff Bonforte, SVP, Yahoo Communications, wrote in the company's blog,. "To turn on the new Tabs, go to View, Multitasking and select Tabs. Emails you want to read, emails you are composing, Calendar and Contacts all appear as individual tabs. If you use the preview pane, double-clicking an email will open it in a tab."

The reintroduction of tabs does not eliminate the newer Recent View feature. Yahoo is playing safe by leaving it to the customers to choose whether they want the Recent View or the Tabs.

Tabs has got a little tweak for better usage. Finding the right tab among many others is made easier than ever. The web company has added a "Preview All" option that shows users all the tabs in a tile format, making it easy to directly jump to the right tab. Users can press "Esc" on a keyboard to go back to the mail page from the preview window. Yahoo calls this feature "boss mode."

Yahoo says the feature is currently being rolled out to all its users globally and will take a few days before all users can see the option in their mail interface.
