2 Police Officers in Baton Rouge Shot to Death

In a major development that would definitely go on to shake the United States of America in the coming weeks, two police officers have been shot to death in Baton Rouge nearby the headquarters of the Baton Rouge Police. In addition to that, it is believed that people who were in close proximity to the incident are also feared to have been injured. The incident was first reported by The Advocate, a local newspaper and according to its reports, "Two Baton Rouge police officers shot on Sunday morning have died, confirmed William Daniel, the city-parish's chief administrative officer." The paper provided further updates on its website as well, "Baton Rouge Police spokesman Sgt. Don Coppola confirmed that several officers were shot by gunfire. The scene is "contained," he said, but was unable to confirm if the suspect(s) were apprehended. Coppola said that East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office deputies may have also been among those shot. "

A report on USAToday went on to provide crucial details (sourced from WBRZ-TV) in the aftermath of the incident, "A witness told WBRZ-TV that a man was dressed in black with his face covered shooting indiscriminately when he walked out between a convenience store and car wash across from Hammond Air Plaza. Police closed the streets between the police department's headquarters and Interstate 12. WAFB-TV reported officers were shot along Airline Highway near Old Hammond Highway, but didn't specify the number of police. Michael Vinsanau of WBRZ tweeted that more than a dozen marked and unmarked police cars have sped to the scene, and that a SWAT team is on location. State police armed with rifles are posted blocks away, Vinsanau tweeted." The report went on to add, "Baton Rouge police have been under scrutiny after officers fatally shot Alton Sterling, 37, while he was pinned to the ground. Sterling's funeral was Friday. Police have said they thought he was reaching for a gun."

The New York Times spoke to Mark Clements, a resident who lives close the area and he said, "I heard probably 10 to 12 gunshots go off. We heard a bunch of sirens and choppers and everything since then." This is a developing story and further details are awaited.
