Microsoft Won't Launch A New Surface This Year But SP4 Upgrades Likely In Fall

Will Microsoft launch a new Surface device this year? Word has it the company is planning an event this fall that could witness release of Surface Pro 4 successors.

SP 4 was launched last October to initial criticism but soon earned appreciation. Less than a year later, clamor for new Surface Pro has led to speculation a new device with Intel's latest Kaby Lake could launch late this year. While Microsoft has not confirmed or denied rumors of a launch, credible sources have suggested the company is planning a media event later this year where Surface device with minor upgrades could be launched.

Launch of Surface Pro 5 this year is being ruled out given the popularity of Surface Pro 4, Microsoft's past experience immediately following SP 4 launch and arrival of Windows 10 updates. An anniversary Redstone update for W10 is expected next month and a likely Redstone 2 upgrade next spring. This indicates, a likely launch SP 5 with Kaby Lake next year though Intel's latest will be available late this year.

That notwithstanding, prospective buyers anticipate its launch in 2016 given the discounts being offered on SP4. Additionally, an image captured by developer Shuban Chemburkar at Microsoft's Building 88 in Redmond revealed an impending Surface launch this year; the image showed a plaque for a Surface device in 2016 and three in 2017.

Will Microsoft launch a Surface device this year? Highly likely. Surface Pro 4 is powered by Intel's 6th generation processors, the latest available for use, ruling out any major upgrades. Minor SP4 specifications upgrades are being indicated and a likely all-in-one Surface device with large screen independent of Intel.
