Ohio and East Carolina meet at Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Fla., for their bowl game. East Carolina (9-3) had a five-game winning streak snapped on Nov. 29 in their regular season finale against Marshall.
Despite the 59-28 loss to Marshall, which cost the team a shot at the conference title, ECU coach Ruffin McNeill is happy with his program's accomplishments this season and optimistic for next year.
"I am proud of that group," McNeill told the team website, via the Associated Press. "I've been coaching 33 years. It's rare when you have a chance to win nine games but we have a chance to win 10. ... We have done a lot of things that nobody thought we could do."
Pirates quarterback Shane Carden led the offense with 2,623 yards and 32 touchdowns while running back Vintavious Cooper rushed for 995 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Carden's season-long performance netted him the Conference USA MVP; he ranked sixth in the FBS in passing yards and eighth in touchdowns, according to the Associated Press.
Ohio (7-5), meanwhile, lost three straight games before closing out the regular season with a 51-23 win on Nov. 29 against Massachusetts.
Bobcats coach Frank Solich acknowledged his team's best chance of winning is slowing down the Carden-led offense, which ranks 10th in the FBS with 40.4 points and 331.5 passing yards per game.
"(Carden is) a great thrower, is knowledgeable about the game and reads things well," said Solich. "... They'll also spread people out which enables them to get the ball to their receivers, guys that are playmakers."
Ohio quarterback Tyler Tettleton will be tasked with keeping up with Carden's production. Tettleton finished the regular season with 2,623 passing yards and 20 touchdowns.
