The streaming service Hulu has given a go-ahead to Marvel's new project "Runaways." It has offered a pilot and full-season script order for the comic series, which is an intriguing story of six teens uniting to fight against their wicked parents.
According to reports, the projects will be handled by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of "Gossip Girl" fame and they will be serving as showrunners and executive producers. It is based on Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona's comic book series that was launched in 2003 and centered around a motley group of six teenagers, who discover that their parents are actually part of an evil crime organization and thus, come together to fight their bad guardians.
Though the series received much critical acclaim post- release, it was cancelled after 18 issues as the sales were not strong enough. However, it was revived in the following year as the collected editions had proved to be successful. The re-launch happened in 2008 and a new creative team was brought on board. Vaughan and Alphona remained with the series for only 42 issues but they had carved their niche during the brief time and made a lot of definitive changes that became the highlights of the series.
The use of superhero mythology as a metaphor for the troubling teenage experiences was the loadstone of the series. Another element that rang a bell in the hearts of readers was the diversity of characters. The six teenagers were quite different from each other, in terms of gender as well as outlook. A few characters also belonged to the LGBTQ group, which was quite revolutionary, given the fact that Marvel did not invest much in the diversity of characters at that time.
Therefore, the news has come as a delight for the fans of the original series as they would be revisiting those times again when the television adaptation is released. The realistic and the creative appeal of the series is still a matter of surprise as despite being a simple theme, no one had approached it before. Thankfully, Hulu has adopted it and we just hope it develops beautifully and releases soon.
