Boise State (8-4) will make a run at Hawaii Bowl trophy without quarterback Joe Southwick. The senior was suspended and sent home on Friday for allegedly urinating off a balcony at the team hotel, according to KTVB.com.
While Boise State divulged only that Southwick was sent him for violating team rules, the quarterback told KTVB on Sunday he was dismissed because the team believes he urinated from a balcony — something he denies.
"It just turned to finger pointing, and it ended up being three people against one person saying something, and I guess the temper tantrum of one person didn't look good and there was no investigation," Southwick said during the KTVB interview. "This was an absolute rushed decision, probably made in about 20 minutes."
Grant Hedrick is expected to start in place of Southwick, according to ESPN. Through 12 games this season, Hedrick completed 68.2 percent of his passes for 1,443 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions.
The Broncos will also be without long-time coach Chris Peterson, who was hired on Dec. 6 by Washington.
Although Boise State hired former Arkansas State coach Bryan Harsin for next season, Broncos assistant Bob Gregory will handle the coaching duties in Hawaii, according to ESPN.
Oregon State (6-6), meanwhile, will look to outscore the Broncos with the arm of quarterback Sean Mannion. The junior signal caller played well at the start of the season (4,403 yards, 36 touchdowns and 14 interceptions), but struggled in his last five games (5 touchdowns, 11 interceptions).
