Police officers in New York City fatally shot an armed robber the morning after Christmas, the New York Daily News reported.
Authorities killed James Torres, 44, after chasing him in the Morris Heights section of the Bronx around 4:07 a.m. He had just stolen an iPhone and $80 from a man who was at a Chase Bank ATM. The 24-year-old victim was able to quickly flag down police in the area.
After officers shot Torres, they retrieved the stolen iPhone and his Lorcin .380-caliber gun. He was immediately rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was eventually pronounced dead.
According to ABC7, four officers involved in the shooting were treated for non-life threatening injuries and one of them suffered from a minor hand injury.
Police records show Torres had a long history of criminal activity detailing his 33 arrests, most recently for robbery, petit larceny, controlled substance possession, possession of a weapon (knife), trespassing, and assault.
Though initial reports said Torres opened fire at police, it has not been confirmed if he actually shot at police or not. It is also unknown how many shots were fired in total.
The investigation is still ongoing and officials said they planned on releasing more information on Thursday.
