"Glee" co-creator Ryan Murphy told fans in October that he had always known how the series would end. Unfortunately, his idea had to be shelved following the tragic death of actor Cory Monteith, one of the main characters in the FOX show.
Recently, Entertainment Weekly was able to get details on the original ending. In July, Murphy opened up about his ideas during a speech he gave for the late actor at a eulogy service. He said he had envisioned the series ending with Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn (Cory Monteith).
"The ending of 'Glee' is something I have never shared with anyone, but I always knew it. I've always relied on it as a source of comfort, a North Star," he began. "At the end of Season 6, Lea's Rachel was going to have become a big Broadway star the role she was born to play. Finn was going to have become a teacher, settled down happily in Ohio, at peace with his choice and no longer feeling like a Lima loser. The very last line of dialogue was to be this: Rachel comes back to Ohio, fulfilled and yet not, and walks into Finn's glee club. 'What are you doing here?' he would ask. 'I'm home,' she would reply. Fade out. The end."
At the service Murphy explained how the actor was supposed to be "the beginning and the ending of 'Glee.'"
Fans of the show will remember that the football player was in the very first scene of the pilot of the show - along with Matt Morrison's character Mr. Schu.
"That ending, and that beginning, speaks deeply of my personal feelings for Cory. Despite his troubles, he always felt deeply rooted - dependable, sweet, someone you return for comfort," he said. "One of the most difficult things about the death of a young person is the loss of potential. Of what could be. Cory had a lot of unfulfilled dreams. He longed for more adult material, to prove himself as an actor. And he wanted to direct. He wanted to get better, he wanted to evolve."
Murphy recently announced that the show will air its final episode in Season 6. Details of his reworked ending has not been revealed but he has said in interviews that he plans to have subtle reminders of Finn and Monteith throughout the rest of the series.
