Italian, French and Swiss rescue services immediately responded to the area after the local police tweeted the incident in the Vallee Blanche cable car system, which rises to an altitude of 3,778 metres (12,395 feet).
The cable connection traverses some of the glaciers and crevasses on Mont Blanc and ends at an altitude of 11,000 feet with 30 minutes travel time from end-to-end.
Responding rescuers include two French helicopters, two Italian helicopters, and one chopper from a private company.
A report from Daily Mail disclosed that the rescue operation was halted as darkness fall with only 50 of the 110 people were evacuated to the valley.
Food and survival blankets have been distributed to the 60 tourists who will have to spend the night trapped in their cable cars, suspended 3,700 at the French Alps.
The route attracts around half a million tourists each year.
Initial reports from the French-Italian border suggested strong winds made wires, which support cable cars, cross over, but this has yet to be confirmed.
