Cincinnati (9-3) makes their second straight Belk Bowl appearance. The Bearcats had their six-game winning streak broken in the regular-season finale on Dec. 5 against Louisville, 31-24. Cincinnati coach Tommy Tuberville acknowledged UNC is in a similar situation.
"They are a lot like us because they had a slow start and then won a lot of games in the end," Tuberville said, via ESPN. "We are probably a much better team now than we were at the beginning of the year, as they are."
Cincinnati's offense is led by quarterback Brendon Kay, who completed 68.8 percent of his passes for 3,121 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions; running back Hosey Williams added 609 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
UNC (6-6) had their five-game winning streak ended in the regular-season finale against Duke, 27-25. The Tar Heels won enough games to earn them a bowl game, something coach Larry Fedora is proud of.
"This is a resilient bunch of guys that kept believing in one another throughout the year and I'm glad they were rewarded with a bowl game," said Fedora. "We're looking forward to facing a very good Cincinnati team led by an outstanding coach in Tommy Tuberville."
Sophomore quarterback Marquise Williams took the reins under center after Bryn Renner sustained a season-ending shoulder injury on Nov. 2, ESPN reported. Williams added a new dimension to the Tar Heels offense with his mobility; he leads the team in rushing with 490 yards and six touchdowns.
He also threw for 1,527 yards, 14 touchdowns and six interceptions.
