NFL Black Monday 2013: Shanahan, 3 Other Coaches Fired – Lions' Jim Schwartz Next?

The NFL's Black Monday routinely sees a number of coaches fired. Washington Redskins' Mike Shanahan, Minnesota Vikings' Leslie Frazier, Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Greg Schiano and Cleveland Browns' Rob Chudzinski were let go. Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz is reportedly the next to be fired.

Update (12:55 p.m. ET): ESPN reports Schwartz has been fired.

After a season of turmoil and speculation, Redskins owner Dan Snyder fired Shanahan on Monday. Washington finished the season with a 3-13 record, a dramatic turnaround from the team's 10-6 season and NFC East title last year.

"Redskins fans deserve a better result," Snyder said in statement released on the team website. "We thank Mike for his efforts on behalf of the Redskins. We will focus on what it takes to build a winning team, and my pledge to this organization and to this community is to continue to commit the resources and talent necessary to put this team back in the playoffs."

Shanahan's efforts to build a competitive team were hindered by the NFL's salary cap penalties. He and quarterback Robert Griffin III grabbed headlines throughout the year for their reportedly tumultuous relationship.

Minnesota also relieved Frazier of his coaching duties on Monday after the Vikings went 5-10-1.

"We have tremendous respect and appreciation for Leslie and what he has done for the Minnesota Vikings," owner Zygi Wilf said in a statement released on the team website. "He stepped in and established a strong positive culture here and he has been the consummate professional as our head coach and in this community. Making this change is difficult, but what we determined is best for the organization."

Schiano and general manager Mark Dominik were both fired by the Buccaneers on Monday, according to ESPN. The team confirmed the firings in a statement.

"The results over the past two years have not lived up to our standards and we believe the time has come to find a new direction," Buccaneers co-chairman Bryan Glazer said in a statement to the team website.

Tampa Bay finished the year with a 4-12 record.

Cleveland fired Chudzinski on Sunday after the team's 20-7 loss to Pittsburgh. Chudzinksi finished his inaugural season in Cleveland with a 4-12 record. The firing of the first-year coach, however, didn't sit well with some Browns players.

"This organization is a joke," a Cleveland veteran told NFL.com. "I'm completely in the dark about this. Please (rip them). I feel for Chud. He was good to us."

Schwartz, another coach who found himself on the hot seat toward the end of the season, was fired on Monday after five seasons with Detroit. NFL.com's Ian Rapaport first reported the news.

The Lions (7-9) at one point sat atop the NFC North before losing six of their last eight games.

The day after the NFL's regular season concludes is called "Black Monday" because of the sizeable number of coaches and general managers usually fired that day.
