The public was waiting with baited breath for the first debate to take place between US presidential election candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, and it finally happened on Monday. The verbal duel lived up to the expectations of people as the candidates breathed fire and clashed on many issues.
Trump, in keeping with his reputation, gained more eyeballs on social media and dominated the conversations on Facebook and Twitter, reports USA Today. As for debate issues, ISIS, racism, taxes, economy and criminal justice grabbed the night. Trump attacked Clinton by saying that ISIS was her creation and also slammed her for the Iran deal.
Clinton, on her part, replied that Trump does not have any plan to defeat ISIS. She also gave him a scathing reply in response to his comment that she does not have the stamina to become president. She brought attention to her prior experience as secretary of State and contended that she has traveled to 112 countries and also negotiated a ceasefire and peace deal.
She also hit Trump for his sexist remarks and reminded voters that he had used specific words "dogs, slobs and pigs" to describe women, reports New York Times. Trump did not dispute the charges and brought in the subject of huge money Clinton was spending on sponsoring ads against him. She also expressed her displeasure with his praise for Russian president Vladimir Putin.
When it came to racism, Clinton talked about restoring trust between the police and communities. She also emphasized on taking guns away from people. Trump focused on law and order and said that African Americans and Hispanics were living in hell. He was also in favor of taking away guns but he specifically mentioned "bad people."
When the debate turned to the topic of taxes, Trump came under fire for not releasing his tax returns. He defended himself by saying that he did not do so because they were under audit and turned on the heat towards Clinton by bringing up the subject of her deleted emails. She said that she made a mistake using a private mail and added that she is not going to make any excuses.
