Google's self-driving car involved in broadside crash

Another Google's self-driving car got into the worst autonomous vehicle accident recorded when a driver ran a red light and collided with the passenger side door of the modified Lexus SUV.

According to The Guardian, the accident took place at the intersection between El Camino Rea and Phyllis avenues in Mountain View, California.

The accident happened when the driver of a certain vehicle passed through a red light while Google's self-driving Lexus SUVs passed through the green light Friday afternoon. With this collision, the Google car's airbags was deployed and caved in its front and rear right-side doors.

Luckily, no injuries were reported but the Google car had to be pulled away on a flatbed truck.

Before, there were already cases of accidents in which Google self-driving cars are involved. Most of these accidents are related to the cars being at rear-end when either driving slowly or just stationary at a junction. Some only caused minor damages but there are several cases that caused major damages.

This recent accident, the side impact has brought major damage to the costly test vehicles.

Google already released a statement regarding this and said that the vehicle was in self-driving mode with a person sitting on the steering wheel. According to them, the car hit the brakes automatically upon seeing the other vehicle crossing the red light. The person on the steering wheel did the same too, but that was just not enough to prevent the collision.

On witness, James Allen gave his comment on the said accident, saying, "I've never seen one in an accident and I see at least 30 to 40 a day. They're very good cars, that's why I was so shocked."

Meanwhile a Google representative shared to 9to5Google: "Our light was green for at least six seconds before our car entered the intersection. Thousands of crashes happen every day on US roads, and red-light running is the leading cause of urban crashes in the US. Human error plays a role in 94 percent of these crashes, which is why we're developing fully self-driving technology to make our roads safer."

Google was convinced that their self-directed cars have been involved in a number of accidents and one of these is being the liability of the self-driving car.

With these successive accidents, is it still harmless to use Google self-driving cars?
